When collecting your rental car the lead driver is required to sign an authorisation on their credit card for a sum of money. This sum is known as the Excess (or deductible to our US clients) and it will be used by the rental company to cover the first portion of any losses they incur if the car is lost or stolen.
The sum involved is likely to be between 300 and 2,500 euros, depending on the type of car and the country in which it is rented. AcarintheSun understands that many people want peace of mind whilst away and we therefore have several solutions to this problem:-
The rental companies will almost certainly offer you an Excess Waiver as you collect your car. These are optional and waive the excess in the event of collision damage but most do not cover the excess if the car is stolen. They can also be expensive at typically from 8-18 euros a day.
Many of our car hire rates have a 'No Excess' benefit included.And this includes the excess if the car is stolen. No spending money on extra insurance before you even leave the airport!
Where a 'No Excess' benefit is not included in our rates, this can be quickly and simply added when booking your car. Theft excess is also covered and again it is pre-paid so no spending money as soon as you land.
A final option is an Excess Refund policy. These are independent policies provided by an insurance company and provide cover against losing your excess in the event of collision damage of the vehicle being stolen. Unlike the solutions above, they may also cover losses due to damage to some uninsured parts of the car such as tyres, wheels and glass.
Annual Excess Refund policies are great value as they cover multiple many rentals during the year for one low-cost premium, great for regular travellers and those who own holiday homes overseas.
NOTE: please remember that you will not be covered by the rental car insurance if you are under the influence of drink or drugs or if damage is caused wilfully or by negligence. 'No Excess' and 'Excess Refund' benefits will not cover your losses in these circumstances.
